Biden wants to reward loser Terry McAuliffe with an administration position

After losing a state that President Joe Biden won last year by 10 points, failed Virginia gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe might get rewarded with an administration position.

Punchbowl News reported on Thursday that the White House is looking for a place for McAuliffe, who lost to Republican Gov.-elect Glenn Youngkin earlier this month after driving away parents, suburban women, independents, and Hispanic voters.

McAuliffe isn’t asking the administration for a job, according to the report, and it’s not clear what role he would serve since Biden’s Cabinet is full.

Why Biden would want McAuliffe to be a part of his team after his disastrous loss in Virginia is the real question. Voters rejected him because he was out-of-touch, arrogant, and entitled. He dismissed the concerns of parents as irrelevant, smeared his opponent as a racist out of desperation, and tried to make everything about former President Donald Trump. He was no better than Hillary Clinton was in 2016, and he lost as a result.

The White House’s desire to tap McAuliffe shows it has learned nothing from that loss. To be sure, an administration position is very different from a political campaign. But nothing about McAuliffe’s candidacy or even his past record as Virginia’s governor suggests he has the political foresight or skill to be an asset to Biden’s team.

Quite the opposite, actually. He just barely won the Virginia gubernatorial election in 2013, and he has been dogged by allegations of corruption and sleaziness. In 2009, for example, he was accused of trying to bribe progressive candidate Ralph Nader to stay off the 2004 presidential ballot in several states. And in 2013, he came under fire for allegedly using campaign fundraising activities to enrich himself personally, leading to an inconclusive FBI investigation.

And now he has handed a key swing state back to Republicans less than a year after Biden won it. So what exactly is Biden hoping for?
