Study: Twitter’s ‘Liberal’ Content Turned Voters Away From Trump
A new study from Princeton alleged that liberal content on Twitter turned moderate voters against former President Donald Trump.
Social media platforms, especially Facebook and Twitter, have long had a complex relationship with politics. The nearly 90-page study detailed social media’s effect on elections throughout the United States and concluded that the platforms negatively impacted a moderate voter’s choice when it came to voting for a Republican or Democrat.
“We study how social media affects election outcomes in the United States,” the study said. “We use variation in the number of Twitter users across counties induced by early adopters at the 2007 South by Southwest (SXSW) festival, a key event in Twitter’s rise to popularity.”
The study used maps and graphs to describe and detail how moderates voted in the election.
“Twitter’s relatively liberal content may have persuaded voters with moderate views to vote against Donald Trump,” the study said.
Indeed, the study from the Ivy League school suggested that Twitter “lowered” the Republican vote share in both 2016 and 2020.
“Our results indicate that Twitter lowered the Republican vote share in the 2016 and 2020 presidential election.”

MRC #FreeSpeechAmerica Reader,
Never before have a few companies had the ability to silence the entire conservative movement. Now, a handful of tech companies can censor both the people and the ideals of the right through a dangerous combination of computer programs and deliberate censorship.
This is why #FreeSpeechAmerica, a program of the MRC exists—to defend conservative speech online and expose efforts by top tech companies and their employees to silence conservative voices with Orwellian speech controls. We are part of the only organization purely dedicated to this critical mission and we need your help to fuel this fight.
Donate today to help #FreeSpeechAmerica continue its fight. $25 a month goes a long way in the fight for a free and fair media—which includes social media.
