THE PROBLEM with the LEFT’S family policy

THE PROBLEM with the LEFT’S family policy

OBIDEN – HARRIS – BOLD FACED LIARS

Liberals in Congress are still insisting that they shouldn’t be forced to choose which of their four main family policy priorities makes it into the next multitrillion-dollar spending bill. But Sen. Joe Manchin is insisting they choose, so theNew York Timesasked 18 academics what their choices would be.

See if you can detect a pattern as these liberal academics explain why they chose the family policy priorities they did.

First, on universal pre-kindergarten programs, The New York Times notes that “by enabling mothers to work, it could increase gender equality.”

Then, on why she chose not to extend the Child Tax Credit, sociologist Barbara Risman says, “I’m always very sensitive to policies that even unintentionally discourage mothers’ labor force participation.” Risman apparently prefers subsidized child care or pre-K because, according to the New York Times, “it would help mothers work.”

Next, on why she would choose subsidized child care, sociologist Jill Yavorsky explains, “It would likely pull more women in the workforce, so overall gains to the family would be more than just the reduced cost of child care.”

Finally, sociologist Youngjoo Cha said she would choose to keep paid family leave because “equality can be achieved by changing gender norms both at work and at home, and paid family leave is a basic necessary step.”

See the pattern?

When it comes to family policy, the top priority — the only priority — of the Left is achieving equality. The family, in their view, benefits from policies that force as many mothers into the workforce as quickly as possible.

But do all mothers want to go back to work full-time? Perhaps many would rather take a couple of years off while their children are infants, then maybe go back part-time when their children are toddlers, then maybe go back full-time when they are older?

There is strong evidence that most mothers don’t want to work full-time. Liberals don’t care. They don’t view family policy as a tool to help families make the choices they want. After all, families might choose the wrong thing!

Liberals view the power of the federal government as a social engineering tool to impose gender “equity” on the family. Liberals don’t care if gender equity isn’t what families want.

The institution of the family is falling apart, and conservatives need to offer a coherent alternative to the Left’s family agenda. Thanks to a social safety net designed by leftists to punish marriage, as well as decades of falling wages for working-class men, fewer people live in married households than ever before.

Conservatives can change this by changing policy. They can start by removing marriage penalties from the welfare state. They can change our immigration, trade, and tax policies so that working-class wages rise instead of falling or being devoured by inflation. They can make it easier for adults to get and stay married and raise the families they want.

That is the family policy America needs.
