When asked how the discussions between Biden and liberal House Democrats went, Jayapal described the conversations as “great” and “really conversational.”
Biden and the progressive House Democrats are negotiating the size and cost of the spending package, details that have put them at odds with more centrist members of the party hesitant with too big a proposal. Democrats hold a slim majority in both chambers of Congress and would need to stand united if they hope to pass a social spending bill largely opposed by Republicans.
After Tuesday’s discussion with the progressive House Democrats, the price range for the budget reconciliation package stands somewhere between $1.9 trillion and $2.2 trillion, according to CBS News.
Biden also met later in the day with a bicameral group of centrist Democrats to discuss his legislative agenda ahead of a self-imposed Oct. 31 deadline to pass his Build Back Better plan.
