Elon Musk says Twitter helped progressive candidates win their elections.
Musk was responding to a tweet discussing the censorship of conservative candidates on the platform in order to boost liberal ones. He promised that the company would be more transparent under his leadership.
“The more I learn, the worse it gets. The world should know the truth of what has been happening at Twitter,” he tweeted on Wednesday. “Transparency will earn the trust of the people.”
Musk added that the accounts of conservative candidates were “objectively” censored more than progressive ones.
“It is objectively the case that ‘conservative’ political candidates were more negatively affected than ‘progressive’ candidates,” he tweeted. “Anyone using Twitter knows this. Question is simply one of magnitude.”
The transparency follows a promise he made in October that he will personally “look into” one-sided censorship during the 2022 midterm elections.
“I will look into this,” he tweeted. “Twitter should be even-handed, favoring neither side.”
Musk’s comments reflect what we already knew about Big Tech’s influence on recent elections, particularly on social media.
Original research from Media Research Center’s CensorTrack recorded the censorship of conservatives 646 times between March 10, 2020, and March 10, 2022 to boost President Joe Biden and his agenda.
