‘Should never be allowed to happen’: Trump shows support for Flynn after FBI notes unsealed

President Trump defended retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn on social media a day after newly unsealed FBI notes revealed that top officials contemplated prosecuting him before interviewing him.

Reports that Flynn, 61, who pleaded guilty in December 2017 for lying to investigators in connection with special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation, could soon be exonerated have been circulating recently. On Wednesday, records were unsealed through a consent agreement by Flynn’s lawyers and the Justice Department, which revealed a note from an undisclosed FBI official that read, “What is our goal? Truth/Admission or to get him to lie, so we can prosecute him or get him fired?”

The president, whom some have suggested should pardon Flynn, responded to the newly unsealed documents on social media Wednesday night and Thursday morning with more than a dozen combined tweets and retweets on the subject.

The president tweeted, “.@CNN doesn’t want to speak about their persecution of General Michael Flynn & why they got the story so wrong,” he wrote in one tweet. “They, along with others, should pay a big price for what they have purposely done to this man & his family. They won’t even cover the big breaking news about this scam!”

“What happened to General Michael Flynn, a war hero, should never be allowed to happen to a citizen of the United States again!” Trump said in another tweet.

He followed those up by tweeting, “DIRTY COP JAMES COMEY GOT CAUGHT!”

In addition to retweeting messages of support for Flynn from conservative media members, including Bill Mitchell and Dan Bongino, Trump also retweeted his son, Donald Trump Jr., twice about the Flynn revelations.

“Not only should general Flynn’s charges be dropped immediately but the treasonous actors who set him up should be in jail!!!” the younger Trump exclaimed. “Imagine having your life and reputation ruined by rogue US govt. officials. Then years later when the plot finally comes to light the first thing you do is post an American flag. This is the guy they wanted you to believe was a Russian asset.”

Flynn himself responded to the news by breaking his nearly two-year Twitter silence to share a video of the American flag waving in the wind, which the president retweeted, writing, “Great!”

Flynn initially pleaded guilty to lying to investigators, but he filed to withdraw his plea in January after the Justice Department asked the judge to sentence him up to six months in prison. The department later said probation would also be appropriate and called Flynn’s claims of innocence an “extraordinary reversal.”

Former FBI Director James Comey, who’s a frequent Trump target, admitted that he took advantage of the chaos in the early days of Trump’s administration by sending Peter Strzok and another FBI agent to talk to Flynn. At that point, Flynn agreed to cooperate with Mueller’s Russia investigation, admitting and then reaffirming his guilt in 2017 and 2018
